Trump and Clinton Give Speeches as 2016 Election Comes to A Close
Last
night, the 2016 Presidential Election came to a close. The two candidates were neck-and-neck as they
fought for the presidential title. However, the end results showed Donald Trump
at the top, defeating Hillary Clinton and becoming America’s newest Republican president.
Trump’s
victory was quite an upset, as nearly all polls showed Clinton leading going
into election night. In fact, many Americans are skeptical of some kind of
interference or tampering with the ballots.
In
both candidates’ victory/concession speeches, they recognized and appreciated
the other’s efforts. “We owe her a major debt of gratitude for her service to
our country,” said Trump, referring to Clinton.
In
Clinton’s concession speech, she gracefully accepted her loss. She emphasized
the importance of respecting the new president and allowing him to lead. “Our
campaign was never about one person or even one election, it was about the
country we love,” she said. She added, “I offered to work WITH him on behalf of
our country.”
Trumps
victory speech seemed to focus on unifying the country as a whole. “It is time
for us to come together as one united people,” he said. He went on to pledge, “to
every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans.”
Trump
stressed his goals for peace among the nations. “I will deal fairly with
everyone,” he claimed, talking about people from other nations as well as
America itself.
In
both speeches, the presidential candidates showed their high appreciation for
their supporters. Clinton went as far to speak to her audience as if they were on
a team. Referring to her candidacy, she said, “this wonderful campaign that WE
built together,” emphasizing her supporters’ roles in her near success.
Both
candidates stressed their focus on the future of America as they gave their closing
speeches. In her concession speech, Clinton went as far as to say, “we must
accept this result and then look to the future.” Further, in his victory speech,
Trump claimed, “while the campaign is over, our work on this movement is now
really just beginning.”
