The Case Against Abortion: Article Analysis
Opinion | The Case Against Abortion - The New York Times (nytimes.com)
This article provides many valid arguments against abortion
which I can understand. However, morally, I must disagree with what the article
says as a whole. Though I am a Christian, and I believe every life is valuable,
I think that there are circumstances where abortions become necessary. For example,
young girls getting pregnant as a result of rape, whose bodies cannot
physically handle pregnancy. Additionally, mothers whose health doesn’t allow them
to safely carry babies to term. I believe that there are many cases where
adoption is a much better option, however. For example, expecting mothers who
simply cannot financially support another life, or women who cannot create a safe
environment for a child. One instance where I absolutely cannot support
abortions is in the rare cases of women who are simply too lazy to use
effective forms of birth control, and instead choose to resort to drastic
measures when they decide they don’t want to carry a child. However, those
women are the minority.
The author of this article claims that the pro-choice side
of society focuses mostly on feministic views of ‘keeping women in the
workplace’ and ‘allowing them to accomplish their goals’. But I think that viewing
this issue in that manner is disrespectful to the women who are forced to make
these difficult decisions. Despite what many pro-life society members may feel,
abortion is not something that is decided upon lightly. It is something that causes
women lots of emotional and physical distress. Of course, an argument could be
made that some women get abortions simply with their future goals in mind, not
considering the life that they are disposing of. But once again, these women
are the minority. I don’t think that abortion is something that should be taken
away from women whose situations deem it absolutely necessary just because some
women abuse it. I do recognize, and agree, however, that it is sad that many
fetus’ lives are taken as a result of these women in the minority. This is why
it is so hard for me to form a definite and concrete opinion on this subject. I
believe that all lives are important, including the women’s lives that could be
forced to dangerously carry babies to term. The difficult question to answer
is: Which life is more important?
